LED street lighting and public health
2023-03
For some reason, LED lighting has a bad news and is seen as a cause of various adverse effects on humans, animals, and plants. Reports from the United States and Europe indicate that LED street lights have two main impacts on humans: the production of blue light can affect melatonin production and glare, thereby damaging vision.
In order to address these issues and assist our members, ILP has issued guidance 5/17: Using LEDs to document our stance on these issues in our industry.
Recent reports have captured headlines, including the photobiological effects of LED lighting released by the UK Department of Public Health. This conclusion indicates that it is possible to emit blue light from LED light source, which may lead to the destruction of melatonin, affect our Circadian rhythm and sleep mode, so we are healthy. Some of the articles mentioned in the report did not mention that due to the fact that LED street lights have a thin film directly applied to LED chips and use these light sources, the report points out that there is no evidence to support any adverse human photobiology.
